FIRST Steamworks is the designated game for the 2017 FIRST Robotics Competition. The game is played on a field consisting of two Airships, and two Boilers, one of each for both alliances. Using gears and fuel, the teams must try and score as many points as possible in the time frame permitted.

Each match begins with a fifteen second Autonomous Period. In this Autonomous period, the teams attempt to score the most amount of points all based on programmed instructions prior to the start of the match.

After Autonomous Period has concluded, the drivers are then allowed to control their robots. The three teams within each alliance work together to score as many points as possible by shooting the fuel into the boilers and placing gears on lifts that are transferred onto the airships. ‘Fuel’ are large wiffle balls that are used as field components. The ‘gears’ are toothed wheels used to start rotors on the airships, scoring points. Another way for teams to score points would be to board the airships by climbing the suspended ropes and reach the touchpads near the end of each match.

At the end of each match, the score for each team and alliance will be assessed. The alliance that wins the match gains two ranking points. In the situation of a tie, each alliance will get one ranking point.
